looking back at your preliminary, what do you feel you have learnt in the progress from it to the full product?
Within the preliminary task, we used a mid shot which then went to a long shot whilst Hannah was walking up to the door to go into the room. Whilst she was opening the door and having a conversation a mid shot was used throughout; and these were the only shots used with a neutral view, as well as the shot reverse shot for the conversation. Where as in our OTS we used a range of camera shots and angles which created more tension, and we understood the use of them to have an effect on our audience - their emotion and understanding. For example, we used a high angle shot at the window looking down to the car, this shows vulnerability towards the people below which creates the audience to be tense.
Sound and music was not used in our preliminary task as the main focus of the task was the dialogue exchanged between the two people. The editing that was used was also basic and wasn't too complex as our group was not that familiar with the editing software which was 'final cut'. |
preliminary taskOur preliminary task involved our group making a short film involving someone opening a door, crossing a room, sitting opposite another person and exchanging a few lines of dialogue. The task was set to help our group to develop our media skills. The video was 23 seconds long and consisted of a variety of shots. This included shot reverse shot and match on action. Whilst filming we learnt different techniques which we would later on use in our OTS and one of these consisted of the 180 degree rule. This means that from your line of vision (in the middle) you shouldn't go past it. When you do go over, this is wrong because it changes the position of the character meaning that both characters are on the same side (when having a conversation.)

We used the same editing software when editing our OTS as we did for our preliminary task - 'final cut'. As a group we filmed some more mini clips like 'the exchange' and our 'mini horror' which allowed us to edit that and become more familiar with the software. Whilst editing the preliminary task we were able to use the basic editing and then from then on our skills developed; this allowed us to make a well edited OTS. While editing our OTS we were able to add sound, titles, rearrange order of shots, use background, use filters and transitions and colour correct and also hide shot errors.

spiridon 0tsIn our OTS 'Spridon' we used a range of camera shots, angles and movements and this was due to us doing a preliminary task. By doing this, it enables us to see what works well together in a situation, for example we would use a shot reverse shot to show that the characters are having a conversation instead of having the camera just on one person. We were also aware of our target audience, this helped us to use a variety of techniques to make there emotions run.
Sound was also used in our OTS to create suspense and tension and is a main feature within the horror genre. Sound is always used in horror films to make the audience feel more tense and suspicious in to what is going to happen next. The sound effects which were used had to be timed right on different sections of our horror. If this was used incorrectly then the whole horror could have ended in a disaster. As well as using non-diegetic sound, diegetic sound was also used so the audience could feel like they were there and in that situation. |
