Today we made our distribution and production company videos which are going to be added to the beginning of our opening title sequence. The distribution company is
We researched the most popular rented, bought and highest ratings for horror films and looked at 'what the experts say' and how much money the films made. Here are some examples of websites we used to find our research:
Bought- Amazon Rented- rottentomatoes and Netflix What the experts say- IMBD Rating- IMBD and metacritic Money- Box office Mojo These websites helped us research the information we needed to guide us in the right direction to decide what genre people prefer to watch and what appeals to different audiences. Also we were able to see what the companies did to make money. We watched an opening title sequence of the film 'Dexter' and made many references to death and killing. Here are some examples:
-taking a shirt off which represents suffocation -cutting into red meat which represents blood -cutting into a blood orange which represents blood -killing a fly represents death -shaving and cutting himself represents blood -string cutting the blood circulation off fingers represents hanging -pulling shoe laces represents hanging In this lesson we learned how to make a storyboard and the three main elements to it which are to sketch the shot, label the shot and describe whats happening in it.
We had to use a range of different shots for example, mid shot, close up, extreme close up and long shot we also used low, high and neutral angles. Camera movement was used too such as 360 degree rotation, camera panning and camera tilt. We watched eight different shots from the film 'The Grudge' these were: 1) A low angle mid shot and the camera rotated 360 degrees around the character which creates a sense of isolation and shows the audience that the character is alone. 2) A mid shot of the character and the camera pans across the screen to focus on a door behind her to attract the audiences attention to the door. This scene was long to build suspense. 3) A mid shot and the camera is below eye level to show that something isn't quite right. 4) A closer mid shot of the character and the angle is high to show the audience that she is vulnerable. 5) A close up of the victims face to show their facial expressions so the audience know they are scared. 6) A close up of the killer's face which is just a slight flash of them which jumps out to scare the audience and make them jump. 7) A mid shot of the victims legs dangling from the loft. The camera tilts downwards to show the full length of the legs. 8) A long shot of the legs dangling out of the loft to show that the killer is dead. We learnt about the 180 degree rule which is when you film within your line of vision and shouldn't go past it. When you do go over this it is wrong because it changes the position of the character meaning that both characters are on the same side when having a conversation.
We then made our preliminary task using the 180 degree rule to see how good our filming and editing was. Our group filmed me walking through a door to then sit down opposite Holly at a table and have a conversation with her. When the conversation ended I had to walk back out of the room. Whilst filming this we had to use the correct shots, angles and movements, including the 180 degree rule. In our third lesson we watched different opening title sequences to see what was effective and what we could use in our own filming. We watched The Ring, The Woman in Black and Ils. I made a list of what was effective.
These are: -Creating suspense -Making the location isolated -dramatic music which increases intensity -Use of silence -Camera movement which tricks the audience -specific weather, for example rain and storms to make the scene more dramatic -effective shots, angles and movement -ambiant sound, for example crickets which suggets isolation -make the character who is murdered unlikeable so the audience don't care about it and won't remember him/her at the end of the film. They're not meant to be remembered. -Using 'push pull focus' for example the camera focus's on a phone ringing and the background is blurred. The camera then goes out of focus on the phone and fo In my second lesson of media I learnt the Do's and Don'ts of filming which my group put on the 'do's and don'ts' page.
We practised the correct ways of filming in our mini video 'The Exchange' we made a few mistakes which we can learn from when it comes to filming our opening title sequence. In my first lesson of media I learnt the 7 key concepts of filming which are:
