Today we learnt different peoples theories such as Clover and Craven. This let us know some more information, which led us to think about our horror more. For example, Craven based Scream in a school which should be a safe place but in the end it wasn't. This led us to our conclusion for our opening title sequence that we'd film in a house which is safe as it isn't in the middle of nowhere, it is surrounded by other people.
As a group we came up with our vague storyline today which is:
Holly is babysitting at a house she unfamiliar with and the children are already in bed by the time she gets there. In the house a young girl died as her parents left her for dead, she possesses children as she never got to grow up so she doesn't see why others get the chance. She's on Facetime (to show the up to date technology) and then she hears noises upstairs. When she goes up one of the children are out of ben and it turns out the child gets possessed and then in the end kills Holly. Today as a class we learnt how to make different types of blood. In our group we made gravy blood which consisted of gravy granules, boiling water and red food colouring.
We made blood to see how each of them tasted and so if you had to use them in your horror, you are familiar to the taste. We went around the class and each group introduced their blood and taught us all how to make each individual one. Then a couple of people tasted them to see what they were like. After that we went outside to see how they would look when used in our horror. We were able to chuck them at people to see how it looked. For example, if you need a cut wound then you wouldn't have thick lumpy blood, it would be smooth and runny. This let everyone have an idea of what they needed to use depending on their sub-genre and what happens in their opening title sequence. We learnt the classic horror shots in media which was the opening title sequence of The Grudge.
These were a variety of shots that were used to show the audience all of the surroundings and what was happening in the scene, these were: 1. 360 degrees rotation around the victim (LA, MS) 2. Camera moving towards where the victim is looking (closer MS) 3. Camera below eye level (MS, camera lower down) 4. Looking up, closer to show no surroundings - only the victim (HA, CU 5. Letting out light (with a lighter) with things in the foreground which creates discomfort (CU) 6. The grudge jumping into the camera (CU to ECU) 7. Victims legs disappearing into the loft (Tilt, MS) 8. The room in which the victim was in (LS) Today as a group we constructed our distibution and production company videos.
The distribution - worldwide/global The production - Today we researched the different ways to find out about different horror films. What was the most popular rented, bought, highest rating, what the experts say and how much money they made.
Rented - rottentomatoes and Netflix Bought - Amazon Rating - IMDB and metacritic What the experts say - IMDB Money - Box office mojo These websites showed us the information we needed so that we know what our audience liked to watch and how the companies were able to make money. We first were able to watch Dexter and identify different types of things that either relate to death or killing, I came up with 15 references, a couple were: - blood- from cutting himself when shaving - rope/string, laces and floss holding it tight so the blood rushes to the surface - shirt over his face = suffocating - meat cooking = flesh - grinder - a blood orange - flesh/guts Then I learnt the different types of opening title sequences: 1. Symbolic - opening of Dexter 2. Saw style editing 3. Linear editing 4. Non-Linear editing - nightmare on elmstreet Today we learnt the purpose of using storyboards:
-to use for planning - its vital when filming for something to follow so you know what you are doing -use a range of angles, shots and movements - NOT the same angle etc. next to each other correct = MS, LS, ECU wrong = LS, LS, ECU -need a location which relates to your storyline, e.g if it's to do with spirits you would either be in a haunted house or in a graveyard; not in daylight just walking down the street A successful storyboard needs: -a sketch shot -labelled shot -description of what's happening in the shot/scene We also learnt the 8 shots from the grudge: 1. Low angle, MS whilst the camera moves 360 degrees around the victim 2. Closer MS, the camera moves to where the victim is looking 3. MS, camera lower down - the camera moves below eye level 4. High angle, closer MS as the victim is looking up - the camera is closer so you cannot see any of the surroundings, only the victim 5. CU, the victim has a lighter whilst she's looking - includes cobwebs infront of her (in the foreground) which creates discomfort 6. CU to ECU of the grudge jumping into the camera (JUMP!) 7. Tilt, MS the victims legs disappearing into the loft 8. LS of the room she was in before she was taken, including the wardrobe she got taken up into Today I learnt a few shortcuts on final-cut pro to help me when editing.
First to create a new video, you have to create a new project and to use the initials of your group so you know who's work is what. - the arrow keys are for going forward and back on the video so you can get the accurate bit you want to edit - i = in - o = out - b = blade - a = get it back to normal - command Z = undo - command C = copy - command V = paste Over the next few lessons our group have to produce a preliminary task. This is for one character to walk through a door and sit down, then exchange a mini conversation with another character and then walk back out. We had to think about our camera shots, angles and movements and think about the camera rules, including the 180 rule and the continuity error.
The 180 degree rule means that from your line of vision (in the middle) you shouldn't go past it. When you do go over this is wrong because it changes the position of the character meaning that both characters are on the same side (when having a conversation.) The preliminary task enabled us to practise our filming and editing (with final-cut pro). |
