lighting
In our opening title sequence the lighting is going to be dark outside as this makes the victim more vulnerable as in the house the lights are on, so when they look out they can't really see much, mostly their own reflection which creates tension. Also the majority of horror films are filmed in the dark for a more scary effect.
Inside the house, the lights are on as this makes the victim feel safe - (they also can see where they are going).
As the tension builds throughout the title sequence, the lighting begins to fade as the victim is becoming more vulnerable and weak.

10:00am - At this time it would not be suitable to film our horror as we wanted all of our cast to be awake and alert so they could act to the best of their ability. Our OTS is also filmed at dusk/in the dark so it wouldn't make sense if it was daylight outside (wrong lighting). When it is lighter it doesn't seem as tense/scary to the audience so they wouldn't feel the same emotions as they would if it was dark.
12:00pm - This time would still not be suitable to film as it's still extremely light as it is the middle of the day. There would also be a lot of noise of people going past the house - this would not be good for our OTS as we want the audience to know how isolated our victim is. If the audience are able to hear noise then they know there are people around to help. 2:00pm - Again, this time would not be suitable as it being too light. 4:00pm - This was a perfect time to start filming our OTS as the sun was just going down and it was beginning to become dusk. This meant when filmed, the audience would be able to see that the day is coming to an end. Less people were going past the house and so there was minimum voice which indicated that the victim was alone with no help. 5/6:00pm - This was also a good time to film as our first shots would have been filmed in the dusk lighting and the rest would of been the light decreasing and coming to dark. This shows that time has passed over in our film and it is now late night where she is all alone. |
Filming in the dark creates more tension as when the character is inside looking out they cannot see anything except their reflection, so they are unable to see who/what is out there.
When filming during the day (in daylight), it gives the character more security and the audience feels like they are safe.
In our horror film 'Spiridon' we filmed in the dusk light at the start to show Holly going into the house, then over time it got dark - this shows time has passed. Also it shows her sense of security is decreasing and she is becoming more vulnerable.
